What PST corruption means
A Personal Storage Table (.pst) stores Outlook messages, folders, contacts, calendar items, and structural indexes. Corruption means some part of that file no longer agrees with the format Outlook expects. It can follow an interrupted write, storage failure, incomplete copy, or other damage, but the error shown by Outlook rarely proves the cause by itself.
A missing file, read-only copy, unavailable network location, broken Outlook profile, or unsupported file type can all produce an “unable to open” symptom without structural corruption. If opening is the only symptom, start with the PST open-error checklist.
Rule out the simpler causes
- Confirm that it is a PST.An OST is an offline cache, not a PST. CorrectPST does not repair or convert OST files.
- Confirm that the expected file still exists. If Outlook points to an old or disconnected location, locate the intended PST rather than creating a replacement with the same name.
- Move the working copy to a local drive.Do not repair a PST while it is on a network share, removable media, or inside a cloud-synced folder. Let any copy finish before opening it.
- Check ordinary access.Make sure your Windows account can read and write the working copy and that its read-only attribute is not set. Access errors alone do not establish corruption.
- Use the right Outlook path.New Outlook and classic Outlook have different PST capabilities. Microsoft’s current new-Outlook support also depends on a compatible classic Outlook installation.
Try Microsoft’s repair path first
For a PST that still appears damaged, Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool (ScanPST) is the supported first-line repair path. It examines the file’s internal structures and attempts to correct inconsistencies. Our step-by-step ScanPST guide explains how to protect the original, locate the installed tool, run it, and interpret the result.
You can also go directly to Microsoft’s current instructions for repairing Outlook data files with the Inbox Repair Tool. Use a working copy. Although ScanPST can create a backup during repair, that is not a substitute for preserving an untouched source.
Open the repaired working copy in Outlook and inspect representative folders, messages, dates, and attachments. If it opens normally and the content you need is present, you probably do not need another repair tool.
How to interpret an incomplete repair
A tool can restore structural consistency without recovering every damaged item. Microsoft notes that ScanPST may be unable to recover some data and may place recovered material in a Lost and Found folder. Review the actual mailbox content instead of treating “repair complete” as proof of perfect recovery.
Structural damage becomes more likely when ScanPST cannot recognize or finish scanning the working copy, reports errors after repeated supported passes, or produces a file Outlook still rejects after path and access problems have been ruled out. Keep every attempted output separate from the untouched original.
What free CorrectPST diagnosis can tell you
CorrectPST can diagnose a Unicode Outlook PST (format version 23) up to 7.5 GiB for the structural conditions its repair engine supports. Diagnosis is free and does not use a repair credit. It can identify whether the file is recognized, whether supported structural damage is present, and whether CorrectPST can safely offer its bounded repair path.
CorrectPST does not repair OST files, older ANSI PSTs, password-protected PSTs, deleted files, damaged disks, Outlook profiles, or files above the automated limit. It cannot guarantee that every damaged item can be recovered or that every structurally recognized record will appear identically in Outlook. A repaired candidate is offered only after independent structural verification, as a new file; the uploaded source is not modified.
Common questions
Can PST repair recover permanently deleted email?
Not necessarily. Repair tools rebuild or correct structures in the PST that still exists; they are not deleted-file or disk-recovery tools. CorrectPST does not promise recovery of deleted items.
Should I repair the only copy of my PST?
No. Preserve an untouched copy first. If the file or storage device is deteriorating, minimize further writes and consider qualified data-recovery help before running repair software.
Do I need Outlook installed to diagnose with CorrectPST?
No. CorrectPST’s diagnosis runs in its private service. Outlook is still the appropriate application for checking whether a repaired result opens and whether the mailbox content you need is usable.
